Discover 10 foods that become toxic when they’re reheated. #10 will teach you a lesson!
Keeping leftovers for later or for the next day is a very good thing. Cheap and practical, leftovers are always welcome at the dinner table when you don’t really know what to cook or when the fridge is empty on a Sunday night. That being said, some dishes and foods shouldn’t be reheated, simply because they can become toxic for your body, so be careful or you could get food poisoning! Because prevention is better than a cure, here are 12 foods that become toxic when they’re reheated that you should avoid.
#1 Beetroots, salad and spinach
Although they’re all very healthy and delicious when they’re well cooked, these three foods betray us when they’re reheated because they release nitrates that are harmful to our bodies. It’s better to serve them cold with a good salad dressing.

Oils are used for both salad dressing and cooking steak but some of them can’t withstand high temperatures and aren’t made to be heated. For example, walnut oil and avocado oil turn rancid very quickly when in contact with heat and they become toxic.
The day after a good roast, you may still have a lot of potatoes to eat but don’t know what to do. Turn them into a salad! When oxidized, they become dangerous for our bodies and our health, but you can always cut them in small cubes and pan fried them with some thyme, salt, pepper and olive oil.
Very digestible and tasty, turnips are excellent vegetables. In a soup or mashed, they can be used to create flavoursome dishes. However, be careful; if you reheat the turnip and you get a very unpleasant smell, it’d be a good move to get rid of it.
Have leftover mushroom risotto or mushroom soup? Well don’t put them in the microwave! Mushrooms release toxic substances when they’re reheated. Don’t play with fire, eat them fresh or prepare them from frozen.
It’s Sunday evening and you’ve got leftover chicken from lunch? Please note that chicken is only meant to be heated once: when you first cook it. This meat is very cheeky, because its appearance doesn’t change when reheated but it really shouldn’t spend a second time in the oven or in the microwave… Eat it cold, with some pickles and mayonnaise or even better: prepare a Caesar salad!
Rice is a false friend and when reheated, it releases bacteria that can be toxic for us. Again, it’s a better option to eat it cold so it’s time to learn how to prepare a Niçoise salad!
Celery contains nitrates, so don’t take the risk of reheating it otherwise you might become intoxicated! Instead, prepare a nice celery Remoulade but don’t keep that in the fridge for too long either.
Unless you want to be sick enough to avoid your cousin’s wedding, don’t reheat the rest of an omelette or scrambled eggs. If you like danger… well then go for it!
Everyone should know this, but seafood is eaten fresh. Only fresh. Don’t keep leftover scallops or prawns in the refrigerator to have them another day or you’ll be guaranteed to get bad food poisoning. You have been warned.
